Texas: Governor Abbott To Further Amend, Renew Severe Storm Disaster Proclamation In May 2026

~ Governor Greg Abbott of Texas has declared a state of disaster in seven counties due to severe storms that have caused widespread damage and posed a threat to life and property. The proclamation, issued on April 27, 2026, has been amended and renewed in subsequent proclamations.

The severe storm event, which began on April 24, 2026, brought heavy rainfall, flash flooding, hazardous wind gusts, large hail, and tornadoes to the affected areas. In response to the ongoing situation, Governor Abbott has declared a disaster in Calhoun, Cameron, Lamar, Palo Pinto, Parker, Victoria, and Wise Counties.

Under Section 418.014 of the Texas Government Code, Governor Abbott has the authority to declare a disaster and take necessary actions to address it. As such, he has authorized the use of all available resources of state government and political subdivisions to cope with this disaster under Section 418.017.

Furthermore, under Section 418.016 of the Texas Government Code, any regulatory statute or order that may hinder necessary actions in response to this disaster will be suspended upon written approval from the Office of the Governor. This includes any state statutes or administrative rules regarding contracting or procurement that may impede emergency response efforts.

Governor Abbott has also ensured that copies of this proclamation will be filed with relevant authorities as required by law.

In his official statement released on May 29th, Governor Abbott stated that he had signed his name and officially caused the Seal of State to be affixed at his office in Austin. The proclamation was attested by Secretary of State Jane Nelson.
