Texas: Governor Abbott, HHSC Announce $60 Million In Federal Funding To 'Make Rural Texans Healthy Again'
EntSun News/11090265
~ In a recent announcement, Governor Greg Abbott revealed that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) will be providing $60 million in federal funding to rural hospital districts. This funding is aimed at creating or improving community-based prevention, wellness, and nutrition programs.
According to Governor Abbott, every community in Texas deserves access to a health system that works as hard as its residents. This funding will aid rural hospital districts in providing critical services to keep Texans healthy and strong. The governor believes that by working together, top-of-the-line health programs and preventive care can be made accessible to every corner of the state.
This initiative is part of the Rural Texas Strong plan, specifically the "Make Rural Texans Healthy Again" program. It aims to support rural hospital districts in improving chronic disease conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease, or obesity.

The federal funding can be used by rural hospital districts for various purposes including opening community wellness centers with exercise and nutrition classes, supporting local food sources like grocery stores and farmers markets, establishing after-hours primary care clinics to reduce non-urgent visits to emergency departments, and providing low- or no-cost chronic disease screenings.
HHS Executive Commissioner Stephanie Muth emphasized the importance of prevention in improving health outcomes in rural Texas. She stated that by supporting wellness and chronic disease prevention efforts, this initiative helps communities take meaningful steps towards lifelong health.
It is estimated that Texas will receive approximately $1.4 billion in federal funding over five years through the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Rural Health Transformation Program. The CMS-approved state plan known as Rural Texas Strong is 100% federally funded and includes six initiatives that deliver funding to rural communities.
However, it should be noted that this federal funding is contingent upon meeting all applicable program requirements. More information can be found on the HHS Rural Health Transformation webpage. Public notices and procurement opportunities for Rural Texas Strong will also be announced through GovDelivery email notifications and posted on the Electronic State Business Daily website.
