Texas: Governor Abbott Announces Over $1.1 Million In Career Training Grants For Four Alamo Area Schools

~ In a recent announcement, Governor Greg Abbott revealed that four schools in the Alamo area have been awarded a total of $1,113,310 in Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) grants by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC). These grants will support career and technical education (CTE) training programs by providing funding for the purchase and installation of equipment to train 202 students for high-demand occupations such as construction managers and registered nurses.

Governor Abbott expressed his enthusiasm for these grants, stating that they will provide Alamo-area students with the necessary tools to pursue successful careers. He also emphasized the importance of equipping the next generation with skills that lead to better job opportunities and higher salaries. The governor extended his gratitude to both the Texas Workforce Commission and the schools involved for their efforts in preparing students for jobs that are in demand by Texas employers.

TWC Chairman Joe Esparza echoed Governor Abbott's sentiments, emphasizing that closing the skills gap begins with providing students with the right tools at the right time. He praised the four schools in the Alamo area for their commitment to expanding CTE programs and offering students a direct path to high-demand careers such as registered nurses and construction managers.

At a ceremony attended by state and local officials as well as school staff at Palo Alto College, TWC Commissioner Representing the Public Brent Connett presented the awards earlier today. The four JET grants include $91,768 to Ingram Independent School District (ISD) to train 37 students as construction managers in partnership with St. Philip's College, $331,792 to Poth ISD to train 45 students as nurses in partnership with Palo Alto College, $339,750 to Southside ISD to train 60 students as nurses in partnership with Palo Alto College, and $350,000 to Southwest ISD to train 60 students as nurses in partnership with Palo Alto College.

Funded by the Texas Legislature every two years, TWC uses JET grants to cover start-up costs for developing or expanding CTE programs in public community, state and technical colleges, school districts, and open-enrollment charter schools. The equipment purchased through these grants must be used to train students for jobs in high-demand occupations. The JET grant awards for the current fiscal year have yet to be announced and will be released in the coming months.
