Texas: Governor Abbott Amends, Renews Drought Disaster Proclamation In May 2026
EntSun News/11092477
~ Governor Greg Abbott of Texas has declared a state of disaster in over 200 counties due to ongoing drought conditions and increased wildfire danger. This proclamation, issued on May 17, 2026, amends and renews a previous disaster proclamation from July 8, 2022.
The initial disaster proclamation was issued after Governor Abbott determined that exceptional drought conditions posed an imminent threat in several counties. The Texas Division of Emergency Management has confirmed that these conditions persist in certain areas and contribute to the heightened risk of wildfires.
In accordance with Section 418.014 of the Texas Government Code, Governor Abbott has declared a disaster in Anderson, Andrews, Aransas, Armstrong, Atascosa, Bailey, Bandera, Bastrop, Bee, Bell, Bexar, Blanco, Borden, Bowie and many other counties. This declaration grants the governor the authority to use all available resources of state government and political subdivisions to address the disaster.

Additionally, pursuant to Section 418.016 of the Texas Government Code, any regulatory statutes or orders that may hinder necessary action in response to this disaster will be suspended upon written approval from the Office of the Governor. This includes any state statutes or administrative rules regarding contracting or procurement that may impede emergency response efforts.
The governor's proclamation also states that copies will be filed with applicable authorities as required by law. It is signed by Governor Abbott and attested by Deputy Secretary of State David Nelson.
This declaration comes as Texas continues to face severe drought conditions and an increased risk of wildfires. The governor's office urges residents in affected counties to stay informed and follow any evacuation orders or safety precautions issued by local authorities.
The full text of Governor Abbott's proclamation can be viewed on the official website for the governor's office. As this disaster continues to unfold, it is important for all Texans to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their communities.
