Texas: Governor Abbott Amends, Renews Drought Disaster Proclamation In April 2026

~ Governor Greg Abbott has declared a state of disaster in 254 counties in Texas due to ongoing drought conditions and increased wildfire danger. The proclamation, issued on July 8, 2022 and amended and renewed in subsequent proclamations, certifies that exceptional drought conditions pose a threat of imminent disaster.

The Texas Division of Emergency Management has confirmed that the same drought conditions persist in certain counties and contribute to the heightened risk of wildfires. In accordance with Section 418.014 of the Texas Government Code, Governor Abbott has exercised his authority to amend and renew the proclamation.

Pursuant to Section 418.017 of the Texas Government Code, Governor Abbott has authorized the use of all available resources of state government and political subdivisions to cope with this disaster. Additionally, in accordance with Section 418.016 of the Texas Government Code, any regulatory statute or order that would hinder necessary action in response to this disaster shall be suspended upon written approval from the Office of the Governor.

Governor Abbott has also authorized the suspension of any state statute or administrative rule regarding contracting or procurement if it would impede emergency response efforts by state agencies. This suspension will remain in effect for the duration of the declared disaster.

As required by law, copies of this proclamation will be filed with applicable authorities. The Governor's proclamation can be viewed on his official website.

In testimony thereof, Governor Abbott has signed his name and officially caused the Seal of State to be affixed at his office in Austin on April 17, 2026. The proclamation is attested by Adam Bitter on behalf of the Secretary of State.
