Texas: Governor Abbott Activates State Emergency Response Resources Ahead Of Severe Storms
EntSun News/11091855
~ As severe storms are expected to hit multiple regions of Texas, Governor Greg Abbott has taken action to ensure the safety of the state's residents. In a press release today, the governor announced that he has directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to activate state emergency response resources.
Governor Abbott stated, "I directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management to activate state emergency resources to assist local officials with any potential weather impact." He also urged Texans to heed the guidance of state and local officials, monitor weather forecasts, and create an emergency plan for themselves and their loved ones. The governor emphasized the importance of not attempting to cross flowing streams or drive across flooded roadways, reminding residents to "Turn Around Don't Drown."
According to the National Weather Service, significant thunderstorm activity is expected to reach across a large portion of the state starting this afternoon and continuing into early Monday morning. These storms bring with them potential hazards such as damaging winds exceeding 75 miles per hour and large hail over 2 inches in diameter. Flash flooding is also a concern, with isolated pockets of 3-6 inches of rainfall possible in some areas. Tornadoes are also a risk in these severe weather conditions. The affected areas include West, North, East, Central, and South-Central Texas, with potential impacts reaching South and Southeast Texas as well.

In response to Governor Abbott's direction, several state emergency response resources have been made available to support local severe weather response operations. These include Swiftwater and Floodwater Rescue Boat Squads and Urban Search and Rescue Teams from Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (Texas A&M Task Force 1, Texas Task Force 2, and Texas A&M Task Force 3), as well as personnel from the Texas Division of Emergency Management (State of Texas Incident Management Team, All Hazards Group responders, Incident Support Task Force, Disaster Recovery Task Force) who will be deployed across the state. The Texas Department of Transportation will also be monitoring road conditions, while the Texas A&M Forest Service will provide saw crews to assist with clearing roadways. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will have Game Wardens, rescue boat teams, and helicopters with hoist capability on standby to assist with water rescues. The Texas Department of Public Safety will also be involved in the response efforts, providing Texas Highway Patrol Troopers, helicopters with hoist capability, and a Tactical Marine Unit.
The Texas Department of State Health Services (Texas Emergency Medical Task Force) will have Severe Weather Support Packages available, which include medics, ambulances, and all-terrain vehicles. The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will provide Disaster Assessment and Recovery Agents and County Extension Agents to support agricultural and livestock needs. The Public Utility Commission of Texas will monitor power outages and coordinate with utility providers, while the Railroad Commission of Texas will monitor the state's natural gas supply and communicate with the oil and gas industry. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality will also be involved in monitoring air, water, and wastewater conditions.
