The Tacoma Police Department is taking a strong stance against impaired driving in an effort to make the city's streets safer. With the goal of preventing fatal and severe crashes, the department will be implementing increased patrols this week through proactive and data-driven enforcement, as well as community engagement.

This initiative has been made possible by a High-Visibility Saturation Patrols grant from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission. City leaders in Tacoma are hopeful that these increased DUI patrols will help reduce the number of DUI offenses, which totaled 573 in 2025.

Mayor Anders Ibsen emphasized the importance of prioritizing the safety of Tacoma's residents, stating, "Even one impaired-driving death is one too many." He also mentioned that this is just one step in a larger effort to address community concerns and create a sense of security in neighborhoods. The City budget process is expected to bring about more developments in this area throughout the year.

In 2020, the Tacoma City Council passed Resolution 40559, committing to Vision Zero with the goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and serious injuries by 2035. The Tacoma Police Department plays a crucial role in achieving this goal by working together with the community to create a safe environment for all residents.

Police Chief Patti Jackson explained that with their staffing levels nearing full capacity, they are able to innovate and better serve Tacoma. She believes that this grant from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission will help every neighborhood feel an increased sense of safety.

Thanks to the $215,156.00 grant, officers will be able to conduct proactive DUI enforcement seven days a week with a focus on high-risk timeframes such as evenings, weekends, and late-night hours. They will also be targeting drug-impaired driving, including THC and poly-drug use, in addition to alcohol-related offenses. The department will utilize available data systems to guide their enforcement activity.

In addition to enforcement efforts, officers will also be participating in community outreach events and public education opportunities. They will also support social media and public messaging efforts to raise awareness about the dangers of impaired driving.

The Tacoma Police Department is committed to creating a safe and secure environment for all residents, and these increased DUI patrols are just one part of their ongoing efforts to achieve this goal. With the support of the community and initiatives like Vision Zero, they hope to see a significant decrease in impaired driving-related crashes in the city.
