Statement from Colorado Springs City Council on Mayor Mobolade's veto of the Recreational Marijuana Sales Tax Ordinance No. 25-59

~ Colorado Springs City Council Overrides Mayor's Veto on Marijuana Sales Tax Allocation
In a recent City Council meeting, Ordinance No. 25-59 was passed with a 6-3 super majority vote. This ordinance allocates revenue from the voter-approved recreational marijuana sales tax, as directed by Ballot Measure 2B which was passed by Colorado Springs voters in 2021.
The ordinance, which was met with opposition from Mayor Mobolade who vetoed it, aims to use the tax revenue for public safety programs, mental health services, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment programs for veterans. However, the mayor's veto was deemed misguided and misrepresentative of the content and intent of the ordinance.
To override the mayor's veto, another super majority approval will be needed at a future City Council meeting. The accompanying materials for Ballot Measure 2B clearly stated that the revenue from the retail recreational marijuana sales tax shall be appropriated at the discretion of the City Council for specific purposes.

Contrary to claims made by Mayor Mobolade, this ordinance does not remove funding options for public safety. In fact, public safety is explicitly listed as an allowable and intended use of the tax revenue. Any claims that this ordinance limits emergency tools or ties the mayor's hands are false.
City Council members have dismissed these accusations as political theater and have emphasized their role as the appropriating body of the budget for Colorado Springs. They are using their discretion granted directly by voters to fulfill their duty in allocating funds for critical public safety and mental health programs.
The City Council has also made it clear that they will not allow misinformation to distort the facts surrounding this issue. They remain focused on honoring the voters' will and ensuring that the tax revenue is used exactly as voted upon. With this decision to override Mayor Mobolade's veto, they are taking a step towards fulfilling their promise to serve and represent the best interests of the community.
