St. Louis: Mayor's Statement on Weekend Safety

~ Over the weekend, the City of St. Louis took proactive measures to ensure the safety of its youth and neighborhoods. Collaborating with the Excise Division and Streets Department, several activities were implemented throughout the city. Additionally, in partnership with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (SLMPD), a temporary curfew of 10 p.m was enforced in areas where previous incidents of violence had occurred, specifically Downtown and Downtown West.

Prior to implementing these strategies, the City consulted with and received support from alderpersons representing these areas. The results were promising as only 23 juveniles were detained on Friday, March 20th, with the youngest being just 11 years old. No further detentions were made on Saturday or Sunday. It is worth noting that out of the 23 juveniles detained, only six were residents of the City.

Upon being detained, these juveniles were taken to a Reunification Center where they awaited pickup by their parents or guardians. During this time, they were provided with meals, snacks, beverages, emotional support, and intake/counseling services by the Office of Violence Prevention (OVP) and its funded partners including Propel Kitchens, Diamond Diva Foundation, Covenant House, Youth in Need, Living with Purpose, MERS Goodwill, and Behavioral Health Response (BHR).

The efforts put in place over the weekend proved to be successful as there were no reported instances of youth gun violence. The City's Mayor and his team consider this a victory and are grateful for the opportunity to connect these families with existing resources and support.

Moving forward, public safety will remain a top priority for the City of St. Louis with a particular focus on protecting its youth. Collaborations with stakeholders will continue to identify effective strategies for ensuring a safe environment for all residents.

As normalcy returns to the city tonight, it is important to note that the standard curfew for youth will be reinstated at 11 p.m. The City remains committed to keeping its communities safe and will continue to work towards this goal.
