Springfield: SPD remembers retired K9 Rocky

EntSun News/11081231
~ SPD's beloved K9 Rocky, a yellow Labrador Retriever, has passed away at the age of 10. The narcotics unit's only canine member joined the department in 2011 and quickly became a valuable asset in the fight against illegal drugs.

During his career, Rocky was responsible for sniffing out an impressive amount of drugs, including 23,452 grams of meth, 70,668 grams of marijuana, 116 grams of cocaine, and 500 grams of heroin. He also helped recover $174,434 in drug proceeds.

According to Sergeant Copley, Rocky was a rare and dedicated K9 who never wavered in his duty to serve and protect. "Regardless of the hour or conditions, he lived to serve," Copley said. "He did so with a smile on his face and a joyful heart."

In retirement, Rocky enjoyed spending his days playing outside, lounging on the front porch, and making friends with feral cats. He was known for his friendly demeanor and would greet anyone he encountered with his signature wobble.

Rocky was laid to rest at Lakeland Pet Cemetery at Rivermonte Memorial Gardens next to fellow K9 officer Charlie. He will be deeply missed by his colleagues and the community he served with dedication and loyalty.
