Springfield: SPD graduates 16 officers, one fire marshal from 79th police academy

Springfield, Mo. ~ On Tuesday, March 25th, the Springfield Police Department will celebrate the graduation of 16 police recruits and one fire marshal from the 79th Police Academy. The ceremony will take place at 7 p.m. at Parkcrest Baptist Church located at 816 W. Republic Rd.

The Springfield Police Academy is a rigorous program that consists of 1,073 hours of law enforcement training over a period of 27 weeks. This particular class of recruits began their training in September and have worked tirelessly to complete the program. After graduation, the new police officers will be paired with experienced field-training officers for an additional 640 hours of on-the-job training over the course of 16 weeks. Once this training is completed, they will be assigned to solo patrol duties in the Uniform Operations Bureau.

In addition to the police recruits, one fire marshal will also be graduating from the academy. This individual will be joining the Bureau of Fire Prevention with the Springfield Fire Department where they will utilize their expertise in fire origin and cause investigations as well as enforcing the Fire Code.

The graduates of this academy come from diverse backgrounds with a variety of educational and work experiences including military, security, corrections, medical, social services, private business, and one experienced firefighter.

For those unable to attend in person, the ceremony will be livestreamed on CityView and on the Springfield Police Department's Facebook page starting at 7 p.m. It is sure to be a proud moment for these new officers and fire marshal as they embark on their careers serving and protecting the community of Springfield.
