Spokane: Shoplifting Incident Becomes A Felony Crime After Store Employee Is Assaulted

~ Spokane Police Officers responded to a call from Northtown Mall on February 16, 2026 at 1:20 p.m. after an employee reported a theft and assault. According to the employee, a male had stolen merchandise and attacked her when she confronted him.

Upon arrival, officers spoke with the employee and a security guard from the mall. They were informed that the suspect, later identified as Devin Smith (30), had entered the store with another male. While inside, Smith took a bottle of perfume/cologne worth over $100 without paying for it.

The employee called for mall security and both approached the two males as they left the mall. Smith then handed the stolen item to his accomplice who fled the scene. When confronted, Smith physically assaulted the employee by hitting her in the face. The victim sustained minor injuries during the altercation.

As a result of this incident, officers had probable cause to arrest Devin Smith (30) for first-degree robbery due to his physical assault while committing theft. He was taken into custody and booked into Spokane County Jail.

Images related to this incident show recovered merchandise from the store. The Spokane Police Department is urging anyone with information about this incident or the unidentified male accomplice to come forward and assist with their investigation.
