~ Spokane Police Department Reminds Public That Entering Fire-Damaged Homes and Taking Property is a Crime
The Spokane Police Department is urging the public to refrain from entering fire-damaged homes without permission and taking property, as it is considered a crime. Officer T. Leming, the department's Public Information Officer, issued a statement reminding citizens that this behavior will not be tolerated.
Recent reports have surfaced of individuals entering homes that have been damaged by fire and taking items without the owner's consent. The SPD wants to make it clear that this is not scavenging or salvaging, but rather a criminal act that will be treated as such.
Officer Leming emphasized that just because a home has been damaged by fire does not mean it is abandoned. The property inside still belongs to someone, and entering without permission can result in charges of trespassing or burglary. Taking items that do not belong to you is also considered theft and can lead to arrest and prosecution.

The department also highlighted the fact that fire survivors have already suffered significant loss and should not have to endure further pain by having their remaining belongings taken. These items may hold sentimental or financial value for the owners, and it is essential to respect their property during this difficult time.
SPD will continue patrolling affected neighborhoods and investigating reports of theft. They urge anyone who witnesses someone entering a fire-damaged home or removing property without permission to contact law enforcement immediately. Providing details such as location, descriptions of individuals involved, and vehicle information can help in their investigation.
In conclusion, Officer Leming's message was clear: these homes and belongings still belong to someone, and the law still applies. The public must respect the property of others during this challenging time for fire survivors.
