Spokane Police Department and SPD Cadets Engage with the Logan Community to Discuss Crime Prevention in the Neighborhood
EntSun News/11080472
~ Spokane, WA - With a recent increase in property crimes in the Logan neighborhood, the Spokane Police Department has taken action to address the issue. The department has implemented an outreach team of Cadet volunteers to engage with the community and educate citizens on how to prevent property crimes.
According to Jaime Lamanna, Crime and Intelligence Analyst for the Spokane Police Department, the Logan neighborhood was chosen as a pilot area for this program due to an increase in residential burglaries. The area had previously been under surveillance for vehicle prowling and bicycle thefts. Lamanna explains that the recent spike in residential burglaries includes vacant homes being targeted for copper wiring and student housing being left unsecured with valuable items easily visible.
In response to this concerning trend, Captain Kendall, who oversees the Northeast Sector, developed a plan and put it into action. He states, "Baker Sector (Northeast Precinct) will be utilizing our SPD Cadets to educate and alert impacted neighborhoods during property crime spikes within specific areas." Captain Kendall believes that community involvement is crucial in reducing property crimes and hopes that this program will empower citizens with knowledge and tools to protect themselves.

Statistics show that property predators tend to target smaller geographic areas where they can easily access covert cover and find valuable items in plain sight. Through outreach efforts by SPD Cadets, the department aims to provide education and resources to residents in these impacted neighborhoods. Captain Kendall is confident that these efforts will make Northeast Spokane a safer place for communities to thrive.
Deana Storch, Northeast Neighborhood Resource Officer and lead advisor for the Cadet program, is excited about involving Cadets in this project. She says, "Not only am I the Northeast Neighborhood Resource Officer, but I am also one of the lead advisors for our Cadet program." Storch describes the Cadets as a group of 18-24 year old volunteers who are passionate about law enforcement and eager to connect with Spokane citizens. She encourages residents to share any concerns with the Cadets so they can relay the information back to her.
To prevent property crimes in their community, the Spokane Police Department recommends several safety measures for both vehicles and homes. These include parking in well-lit and active areas, using anti-theft devices, securing doors and windows, and getting to know neighbors through apps like Nextdoor. When traveling, it is also advised to have someone check on the residence and take care of tasks like shoveling snow and mowing the lawn.
