Spokane: Council Approves Updates to Mobile Food Truck Regulations
EntSun News/11091357
Spokane, WA ~ Spokane City Council Votes to Ease Regulations for Mobile Food Vendors
During Monday's Legislative Session, the Spokane City Council made a significant decision to encourage the activation of public spaces through mobile food vending. The council voted 5-1 in favor of an ordinance that aims to make it easier for food trucks and carts to operate by removing unnecessary regulations.
Council Member Paul Dillon expressed his support for the ordinance, stating that addressing the burdensome regulations for mobile food vendors is a win-win situation. He believes that this move will not only breathe new life into the city but also promote culinary diversity. Dillon also thanked Council Member Sarah Dixit and Mayor Brown's administration for their efforts in advancing this policy.

The newly passed ordinance, C36863, brings about changes to the Spokane Municipal Code (SMC). It removes an entire chapter that imposes separate regulations for mobile food vendors and incorporates key safety provisions into existing zoning and permitting provisions. One of the most significant changes is the elimination of a duplicative city business registration process.
Council Member Dixit emphasized that these updates to mobile food vending align with the city's goal of activating public spaces, particularly in downtown Spokane. She believes that supporting local businesses and entrepreneurs in pursuing their passions while promoting public health, business growth, cultural vibrancy, and economic vitality is crucial.
The ordinance will go into effect 30 days after Mayor Brown's expected signature within several days. This decision is seen as a positive step towards creating a more vibrant and diverse food scene in Spokane while also supporting small business owners.
