Spokane City Council Votes in Support of Moving Forward the STA Ballot Initiative

EntSun News/11090671
Spokane ~ During Monday's Legislative Session, the Spokane City Council voted on a resolution to support the Spokane Transit Authority (STA) ballot initiative, which would reauthorize a 0.2% sales tax for public transportation services. The resolution, proposed by Council Member Paul Dillon, aims to make this funding permanent as it is set to expire at the end of 2028 under a sunset clause.

According to Council Member Dillon, "Spokane Transit Authority is essential to connecting our communities. No matter your ZIP code, everyone across Spokane and the region deserves reliable, accessible transit to get to work and school, while creating economic development, vibrant neighborhoods, and new opportunities for residents. It's time to move forward."

The proposed tax is part of STA's strategic 10-year investment plan known as Connect 2035. This plan aims to expand and improve public transit in the region by supporting initiatives such as the "Opportunity Fare" pilot program for low-income bus fares, mobility-on-demand services, and the Division Street bus rapid transit project.

Council Member Zack Zappone also expressed his support for the resolution stating that "public transit is a cornerstone of our city." He emphasized that people use it every day for various purposes such as work, school, shopping, healthcare appointments, and recreation. Reauthorizing the STA sales tax in August would not only benefit residents but also bring in over $120 million in state and federal grants for construction jobs and expanding services to more areas.

The council's decision has been met with positive reactions from community members who believe that investing in public transportation will lead to a more vibrant and prosperous city where everyone can thrive. The STA ballot initiative will now be put on the August 2026 ballot for voters to decide on its reauthorization.
