MIAMI, July 11, 2025 ~ The Society of Professional Journalists' Green Eyeshade Awards, the nation's largest and oldest regional journalism competition, has announced the winners of its 2025 awards. These awards recognize outstanding journalism produced in 2024.
Among the recipients is Blue Ridge Public Radio, based in Asheville, N.C., which received the prestigious Best of Show honor for its coverage of Hurricane Helene in a package titled "Hell or High Water." The Green Eyeshade judging panel praised the station for its real-time analysis, investigative reporting, fact-checking, and innovative communication methods that served as a lifeline to the community during North Carolina's worst natural disaster on record.
The judges also commended Blue Ridge Public Radio for its use of multimedia platforms to integrate feature reporting with storytelling, data analytics, and compelling photography. They were particularly impressed with the station's post-Helene coverage that held community leaders accountable.

Other notable winners include South Florida Sun Sentinel for Print & Digital Writing, Tallahassee Democrat for Graphics & Photography, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution for Video/Television, WABE for Digital/Online, and Florida International University's Caplin News Staff for Students.
The Green Eyeshade Awards have been honoring exceptional journalism since 1950 and are hosted by Region 3 and Region 12 of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ). The net profits from the competition are reinvested into training programs and advocacy efforts for journalists.
Journalists from 12 southeastern states including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia are eligible to enter. This year's competition saw a significant increase in entries due to changes made in honor of its 75th year. The coverage area was expanded and categories were revamped to reflect the evolving media landscape.
The organizers have announced that the 2026 competition will open for entries in January. Journalists are encouraged to submit their work and showcase the exceptional journalism being produced in the southeastern region of the United States, as well as Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
