Spatial Jazz and Creative Sound Play: Hayes Greenfield Bridges Learning and Connections For All Ages
EntSun News/11086222
Acclaimed saxophonist and electroacoustic artist releases Painting In Sound on May 15 while expanding his innovative sound-based method to classrooms, neurodiverse programs, and senior communities.
BROOKLYN, N.Y. - EntSun -- Jazz saxophonist and electroacoustic artist Hayes Greenfield grew up dyslexic in the 1960s and 70s, at a time when very few people understood how differently some people learn. He studied privately with master musicians including Jaki Byard, Joe Viola, George Garzone, and Hal Galper, and has collaborated with cultural icons such as Roy Lichtenstein, Richie Havens, Rashied Ali, and Paul Bley.
On May 15, Greenfield releases Painting In Sound (Sunnyside Records), a solo, immersive jazz album using spatial and binaural audio to place listeners inside a three-dimensional sonic landscape. Beyond his recordings, Greenfield developed Creative Sound Play(CSP), a listening-centered approach using improvisation, sound-making, and silence to foster creativity, collaboration, and connection. His work with the National Head Start Association brings these methods into early childhood classrooms nationwide, enhancing children's social-emotional learning and executive function skills. His book, Creative Sound Play for Young Learners (Routledge, Eye on Education series), and certificated video curriculum from his website provides educators with tools to integrate sound-based exploration for comprehensive, play-based learning. Greenfield is now introducing CSP to caregivers and researchers for senior communities for people living with memory loss, dementia and Alzheimers.

Renowned developmental neuroscientists who support and champion Creative Sound Play, include Adele Diamond, Kathy Hirsh-Pasek, the late Clancy Blair, Ellen Galinsky, Vikram Patel, Sharon Ritchie, Bruce Marlowe, and Elise Sobol, with affiliations at Harvard University, NYU, Temple University, University of British Columbia, and the Universities of North and South Carolina. Their endorsement underscores the method's foundation in research on child development, cognition, and social-emotional learning.
"For decades, I've explored how sound connects people," Greenfield explains. "Sound-making and listening is fun and plugs into the one activity every body loves to do, simply sparking creativity, interaction, and collaboration, which leads to meaningful human connection and community."
Greenfield's career demonstrates the rare intersection of musical mastery, social impact, and human-centered exploration, offering journalists and audiences alike a story of resilience, innovation, and cross-generational creativity.
