Spark Joshi brings stars of Japanese women's wrestling to the Houston area

HOUSTON - EntSun -- Spark Joshi will be bringing stars from top women's pro wrestling organizations in Japan, STARDOM and Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling (TJPW), to the Houston, Texas area.

Launched in June 2023, Spark Joshi is the first US brand dedicated to importing Joshi Puroresu (Japanese women's pro wrestling) to America.

With a history that began in the 1940s, decades before GLOW, the joshi scene exploded in popularity during the 1970s-80s, with Japanese women who originated moves and finishers adopted by male wrestlers in both the US and Japan. Joshi puroresu rose to become a massive cultural phenomenon, culminating in a 1994 show at the Tokyo Dome that rivaled the live attendance and success of major men's organizations around the world.

By the late 1990s, English-speaking fans in the internet wrestling community began to discover Japanese wrestling. A new niche in American wrestling fandom grew through a culture of VHS tape trading, recommendations from other wrestling fans, and five-star reviews of Japanese matches in pro wrestling newsletters.

Today, with pro wrestling experiencing a resurgeance globally, joshi wrestlers are respected around the world and women wrestlers from Japan have headlined major American organizations including WWE. In 2024, the Netflix series "Queen of Villains" introduced a new generation to the world of joshi puroresu.

"Anime and Japanese video games have been part of American pop culture for decades," says Spark Joshi founder "Chibi" C.B. Liffer. "It's time for a new wave of joshi wrestling everywhere... We're here to light the SPARK that will make joshi puroresu the international cultural phenomenon it deserves to be."

On June 29th, Spark Joshi Ignite Texas will take place at the Baytown Community Center in the Houston area, featuring Hazuki and Koguma from STARDOM, Yuka Sakazaki from AEW (formerly TJPW), Miyu Yamashita from TJPW, SAKI from Girl Prowrestling Unit COLORS, and more to be announced.
