EntSun News/11089006
April 9, 2026 ~ South Bend, IN - The City of South Bend has announced a major streetscape project that will result in the closure of Colfax Avenue for several months. The project, set to begin on April 13, will involve utility work by AEP at the intersection of Niles and Colfax avenues. As a result, the intersection will be closed and a detour route has been established.

According to city officials, the detour route will direct traffic onto Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and Eddy Street via LaSalle Avenue. This closure is just the first phase of the larger Colfax Avenue Streetscape Project, which aims to improve traffic patterns and create safer conditions for pedestrians and cyclists.

Starting on April 20, Colfax Avenue will be closed from the East Bank Trail to Hill Street for Phase One of the project. This phase is expected to be completed in July and will include the construction of a new multi-purpose path, new traffic signals, sidewalks, raised intersections at Niles Avenue and Sycamore Street, a raised crossing at the East Race Trail, decorative lighting and trees.

The project will be completed in three phases with Phase Two involving the closure of Colfax Avenue from Sycamore Street to Gintz Avenue from July through September. The final phase will take place in September with repaving work on Colfax Avenue from Sycamore to Eddy streets.

During this time, motorists are advised to use Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Eddy Street via LaSalle Avenue as an alternate route. City officials have stated that they hope to complete all phases by September but acknowledge that weather delays or unforeseen circumstances may cause delays.

In addition to this project, St. Joseph County has plans for a separate project later this year which involves rebuilding the Colfax Avenue bridge over the St. Joseph River as well as improvements at the intersection of Colfax Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

The City of South Bend is committed to improving the safety and functionality of Colfax Avenue for all residents and visitors. Motorists are advised to plan ahead and use alternate routes during the closure period. Updates on the project's progress will be provided as they become available.
