South Bend: City, Partners Host Tree Planting Event at City Cemetery

~ On May 15, 2026, the City of South Bend made a significant effort to restore the historic landscape of the City Cemetery by planting 31 trees. This project was made possible through a partnership between the city, community volunteers, and support from Amazon.

Mayor James Mueller expressed his gratitude towards this public-private partnership, stating that it will enhance the neighborhoods and create more inviting public spaces for residents. He also acknowledged Amazon's generous contribution and the efforts of volunteers in revitalizing the city.

The City Cemetery is just one of many green spaces being connected through a larger greenway initiative led by the South Bend Greenway Conservancy. This project aims to create a continuous "linear park" that will link the MLK Dream Center to the Kroc Center, providing safe and walkable routes for residents while enhancing neighborhood connectivity.

Amazon's charitable contribution, made through the Arbor Day Foundation, will ensure the long-term care and maintenance of these newly planted trees. Around 50 volunteers from Amazon and local community groups participated in this tree-planting event.
