EntSun News/11073192
October 6th, 2025, in Orlando Florida is going to be a big day for our team as we present our work on a new project named Zelma for z/VM and Linux Modern Administration

EntSun -- We are proud to be a part of "The Open Mainframe Project" which will again be featured as part of IBM TechXchange's (https://www.ibm.com/community/ibm-techxchange-c...) Community Day, which will be held on October 6, the first day of the event.  Last year, Open Mainframe had record-breaking attendance and a packed agenda highlighting open source and projects including Zowe, Galassa, Mentorship, Mainframe Open Education, COBOL Programming Course, Feilong, Software Discovery Tool, zopen Community and more. We hope you will be there to see several exciting new developments in the open mainframe project world.
Our Michael MacIsaac will be presenting Zelma (ZLMA) Most everyday users rely on Intel or AMD CPUs to run Windows, Linux, or macOS. But at the enterprise level, there are mainframe computers that run on the s390x architecture and use z/VM and other Linux distributions, managed through a hypervisor and typically accessed via 'green screen' terminal interfaces—essentially command-line environments.

ZLMA the (z/VM and Linux Modern Administration, pronounced 'zelma')—a new piece of free software that enables Linux servers running under z/VM to be managed in a more modern fashion—largely through a browser. It's a web-based interface that interacts with Feilong REST APIs to perform operations.
Paras Chawla, a BCA graduate with a passion for computers applied for a mentorship through Linux Foundation Mentorship Experience (LFX) and the Open Mainframe project and he was a partner with our Michael MacIsaac as mentor in developing a new piece of free software that enables Linux servers running under z/VM to be managed in a more modern fashion. One day, my mentor and I accidentally broke Linux due to some configuration change. He simply said, "You're only going to learn by breaking things—so this is a good thing." That mindset has really stuck with me.  This is a small example of the many lessons learned along the way.
