Rodney Marshall Appointed 45th Commissioner of the Boston Fire Department
EntSun News/11089659
~ Boston Mayor Michelle Wu has announced the appointment of Rodney Marshall as the 45th Commissioner/Chief of Department for the Boston Fire Department (BFD). Marshall, a 35-year veteran of the department, will begin his new role later this month.
Marshall's extensive experience within the BFD makes him a highly qualified candidate for this position. He joined the department in 1991 and has since risen through the ranks, currently serving as Chief of Operations - Support Services. As a lifelong Bostonian, Marshall has a deep understanding of the city and its communities.
In her statement, Mayor Wu praised Marshall's dedication and leadership within the department. She expressed her confidence in his ability to lead and support the brave men and women who risk their lives every day to keep Boston safe. She also thanked outgoing Commissioner Paul Burke for his strong leadership over the past four years.
Marshall himself expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the department that has shaped his life and career. Growing up in Dorchester, he joined the BFD with a desire to give back to his community. He is committed to supporting his fellow firefighters and staff in their mission to protect Boston's neighborhoods.

Commissioner Burke also spoke highly of Marshall, having worked closely with him for four years. He believes that Mayor Wu has made an excellent choice in appointing Marshall as Commissioner and is confident that he will excel in this role.
Marshall's journey within the BFD began when he was first appointed in 1991 at Engine 56. Over the years, he has received numerous accolades for his bravery and service, including two Commissioner's Unit Citations. In 1998, he was recognized for saving multiple residents during a six-alarm fire, and in 2013 he received another citation for rescuing individuals trapped in a bus with severe roof damage.
One of Marshall's proudest achievements was creating and overseeing the Department's Cadet Program. This program provides opportunities for young inner-city residents to pursue a career as a firefighter, opening up new pathways for diversity within the department.
Marshall's roots in the city run deep, having been born and raised in Grove Hall in Dorchester. His parents were well-respected entrepreneurs within the community, instilling in him a strong sense of community service. He is also a graduate of Boston College, where he earned his bachelor's degree.
As he prepares to take on his new role as Commissioner/Chief of Department, Marshall is committed to continuing the legacy of excellence and dedication within the BFD. With his experience, leadership skills, and passion for serving his community, he is poised to lead the department into a bright future under Mayor Wu's administration.
