EntSun News/11089008
ANNAPOLIS, MD (April 09, 2026) ~ At the Urban Farm Incubator at Watkins Park in Prince George's County, Maryland, a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Mid-Atlantic Region. This renewal of the original MOU, first signed in 2020, solidifies the commitment of both agencies to support Maryland's farmers and natural resources.
The event, held on April 09, 2026, was attended by MDA Secretary Kevin Atticks and EPA Regional Administrator Amy Van Blarcom-Lackey. Secretary Atticks expressed his admiration for the dedication of Maryland's farmers to environmental stewardship. He stated that this renewed partnership with EPA will provide necessary tools and collaboration to support productive farms and a sustainable environment.
The MOU outlines several collaborative goals and activities that will be carried out by both agencies. These include enhanced communication and collaboration through regular meetings, promoting educational opportunities for the agricultural community through roundtables and farm tours, recognizing environmental stewardship efforts of Maryland farms, amplifying funding opportunities for conservation efforts, and coordinating regulatory program implementation.

One of the key objectives of this MOU is to recognize and promote sustainable agriculture practices that benefit the environment. The Chesapeake Bay Program Agricultural Advisory Committee will continue to receive support from both agencies in achieving this goal.
EPA Regional Administrator Amy Van Blarcom-Lackey emphasized the importance of standing with Maryland's farmers in their efforts towards a healthy bottom line and healthy farms. She stated that this agreement will provide access to tools and support that build soil health, boost efficiency, safeguard streams and the Chesapeake Bay, and strengthen urban and rural communities.
This MOU will remain in effect until 2031. Both agencies are committed to working together towards achieving their shared goals of supporting farmers while protecting the environment. With this renewed agreement in place, it is expected that Maryland's agricultural community will continue to thrive while also contributing to the preservation of the state's natural resources.
