Potter & Potter Auctions to Hold its Collection of Edwin A. Dawes, Part IV Event on 10/25/25

CHICAGO - EntSun -- Potter & Potter Auctions is pleased to announce this 477 lot event to be held on October 25, 2025. This auction will be held live at Potter & Potter's gallery, located at 5001 W. Belmont Avenue in Chicago.  It will also be live streamed on the company's website.

Sale highlights include:

Lot #107, Leon & Co., the Wonder Workers Present Fire and Water, which is estimated at $10,000-20,000. This framed, linen backed example measures 87 x 39" and was published in London by Haycock-Cadle around 1910. It is illustrated with Leon (b. Leon H. Levy,1876-1950) applying a torch to a table on which stands a lovely lady. She vanishes in a wisp of smoke and flame, only to reappear inside a water-filled tank hanging some distance away on the stage. This is the only known full-color lithograph advertising The Great Leon's whirlwind vaudeville show and is from the Norm Nielsen collection.

Lot #105, Harry Houdini's (b. Erik Weisz, 1874–1926) 3 Shows in One. The World-Famous Houdini. Master Mystifier,is estimated at $10,000-20,000. This 42¼ × 108-¾" billboard-type poster was printed in the USA around 1925 and is framed with Plexiglas. It is primarily white, black, and orange, and is illustrated with Houdini's smiling bust portrait to the right of the central text advertising his show. Images of bats and a witch appear on the opposite end of the poster.

Lot #104, Chung Ling Soo's (W.E. Robinson, 1861 – 1918) Chung Ling Soo, is estimated at $4,000-8,000. This 30 x 20" linen-backed half-sheet stone lithograph was published in London around 1918 by J. Weiner Ltd. It is illustrated with a bust portrait of Soo in the center of a peacock feather, on a striped pastel background. It has a "Chung Ling Soo Mysteries" overprint to the hanging red scroll at the poster's the lower left.

Lot #424, eight block-and-stencil cards playing cards designed by, and created for the use of, famed magician J. N. Hofzinser (Austrian, 1806-1875), is estimated at $2,500-3,500. These were made in Vienna around 1850 and include five double-faced cards, two blank-back court cards, and a double-ended card (JH/JC) with Tietze-patterned back design. These are from the collection of Edwin A. Dawes and are presented in an envelope labeled in Dawes' hand: "Hofzinser Cards/Gift of Volker Huber"; also included with this lot is an index card of Dawes' holographic notes on the items.
