Perch Publishes Open Tool, Pronunciation Table and Six Dictation Corpora for Veterinary Drug Names

EntSun News/11106359
NEW YORK - EntSun -- On October 21, Perch, the veterinary AI scribe built by Talcoe LLC, published three open releases for checking drug names in dictation: a tool, a table of how 265 veterinary drug names are pronounced and misheard, and six blind dictation corpora holding 1,260 clips.

The tool, called the phoneme lane, checks a clinic's drug list against the sounds in a recording, so a name the transcript mangled can still be found, and it returns the closest matches with the seconds of the clip where each sits. Each match reaches the vet as a suggestion to confirm, and only the vet adds it to the chart. In one synthetic English clip, the transcript spelled famotidine "famitidine," maropitant "meripitin" and Entyce "Entice." The lane's top four names were famotidine, morphine, Entyce and maropitant, and all four had been said. That comes from a single clip and is a demonstration.

The table lists 265 drug and brand names with IPA pronunciations written by software and by a language model, none recorded from a speaker. Sixty six are on Perch's default list and 199 are distractors. For 59 of the 66, a garble atlas records the wrong words speech recognizers wrote when synthetic voices said the name. Atenolol, for instance, came back as "8 nilal."

The corpora hold six sets of 70 rows, 420 in all. Each set has 45 dictations and 25 traps, sentences written to tempt a system into charting a drug nobody said. Authors with no access to Perch's matching code wrote them, and three Kokoro voices read each corpus, giving 1,260 synthetic clips and about five hours of audio.

Every clip is Kokoro text to speech, and a real exam room will sound different. The phoneme lane has been tried only on synthetic speech. These are Perch's own tests, published so others can rerun them, and they make no accuracy claim about any product.

"Any company can report good numbers on its own tests. We want ours checked. Run your system against them and tell us what it gets wrong," said Mohammed Usama, cofounder of Talcoe LLC.

About Perch: Perch is a veterinary AI scribe built by a two person team at Talcoe LLC in New York. While the vet talks through a visit, Perch drafts the note in SOAP, DAP or BIRP format, and the vet reviews and signs it. Perch runs in the browser with nothing to install, and audio is processed in the cloud and is not retained.
