Olympian Zara Northover Fights to be Heard at Michigan Supreme Court

EntSun News/11067707
WASHINGTON - EntSun -- "This case is about more than just me. It's about whether everyday people, especially Black women, can speak up about injustice and still have their day in court." —Zara Northover

Detroit, MI — TEDx speaker, Olympian, and racial equity advocate Zara Northover has formally petitioned the Michigan Supreme Court to review her workplace retaliation case against Rocket Mortgage, asking the justices to intervene after lower courts dismissed her claims without allowing discovery—a move she argues violates established legal precedent.

Zara Northover v. Rocket Mortgage

The case, Northover v. Rocket Mortgage (MSC Docket No. 168725), raises fundamental questions about access to justice for self-represented litigants and whether corporate legal teams can use procedural tactics to evade accountability for alleged discrimination and retaliation. Northover is calling on the public to stand with her in defense of due process.

"This case is about more than just me," said Northover. "It's about whether everyday people, especially Black women, can speak up about injustice and still have their day in court."

Allegations of Retaliation and Denial of Due Process

After raising protected concerns about racial equity in her workplace, Northover alleges she was subjected to a series of retaliatory actions. These included intimidation by senior leadership, racial microaggressions—including a birthday card with a gorilla on the front signed by the company's CEO and COO—forced transfers, public humiliation, and loss of income. She filed her legal claims pro se (without an attorney) but was denied the chance to present evidence when her case was dismissed prematurely by the trial court.

Northover's petition to the Michigan Supreme Court asserts that her dismissal contravened long-standing legal protections. Her appeal has drawn support from civil rights advocates and those concerned with fairness in the justice system, particularly for marginalized voices.

Call to Action: Public Support Needed

Northover is encouraging allies to take action before the August 13, 2025, deadline:
  • Sign the petition in support of due process: https://chng.it/wxdCR5vkDZ
  • Submit a letter to the Michigan Supreme Court urging review of MSC Docket No. 168725 (details in link above).
Letters can be submitted via the MiFILE portal or mailed to:

"This moment is about making sure the courtroom isn't only accessible to those who can afford legal representation," Northover said. "Justice must be equitable, or it isn't justice at all."

As Malcolm X once stated, "The most disrespected person in America is the Black woman." This case exemplifies that reality—and gives the Michigan Supreme Court the opportunity to lead by example.
