NYC Nonprofit Just Focus Launches $20,000 Campaign to Expand Youth Photography Access

EntSun News/11090491
NEW YORK - EntSun -- Just Focus, a New York City-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit, has launched a new fundraising campaign aimed at addressing a growing challenge within its youth photography program: more students than available cameras.

Founded by George Kellman, Just Focus provides free and low-cost photography education, mentorship, and creative development opportunities to youth ages 10–18 across New York City. As demand for the program continues to increase, the organization is expanding both its in-person and virtual offerings to reach more students.

However, limited access to equipment has created a bottleneck in hands-on learning.

"We have students who are ready to learn, ready to create, and ready to tell their stories but not always enough cameras for them to do it," said George Kellman, Founder and Executive Director of Just Focus. "This campaign is about making sure every student has the opportunity to participate, not just observe."

Campaign to Expand Camera Access

Just Focus is currently raising $20,000 to expand its internal camera library. Unlike individual giveaways, the equipment will remain within the program and be used across multiple classes, workshops, and field experiences maximizing long-term impact.

The organization has developed a structured equipment plan that includes:
  • Canon EOS R100 kits for younger students (ages 10–14)
  • Canon EOS R50 systems for advanced students (ages 15–18)

Both systems share a compatible lens ecosystem, allowing the program to scale efficiently while maintaining quality instruction.

Funds raised will go toward cameras, lenses, accessories, storage, and protective equipment that will support hundreds of students over time.

Expanding Beyond the Classroom

In addition to in-person instruction, Just Focus is expanding its digital learning initiatives. The organization is currently beta-testing a virtual photography program built on an immersive platform designed to provide interactive, self-paced and instructor-led learning experiences.

Students can access lessons on composition, lighting, and storytelling without needing prior equipment, helping to remove barriers to entry for underserved youth.

A Platform for Youth Voices

Through its annual showcase, Through My Lens, Just Focus provides students with the opportunity to exhibit their work publicly offering a platform for creative expression and community engagement.

"Photography is more than taking pictures it is a way for young people to see themselves and their communities differently," Kellman added. "We're building confidence, skills, and opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom."

Community Partnerships and Support
