New training director takes helm of Daytona Beach electrical apprenticeship program

PORT ORANGE, Fla. - EntSun -- Daytona Beach native and longtime electrical industry professional Eric Fraine has been named executive director of the Electrical Training Alliance of Daytona Beach, a nonprofit apprenticeship program dedicated to preparing individuals for rewarding careers as licensed electricians. Fraine assumed the role July 1, bringing more than two decades of experience in the electrical, industrial supply and life safety industries.

Fraine most recently spent 12 years with Giles Electric. His previous leadership experience includes sales and management positions with Grainger Industrial Supply, where he worked with government clients, and Teltron Technologies, where he served as national director of life safety management, overseeing life safety systems installation and service for the senior living industry.

Founded 70 years ago through a partnership between the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), the Electrical Training Alliance of Daytona Beach combines classroom instruction with paid, on-the-job training to prepare highly skilled electrical workers while keeping education affordable.

"Skilled electricians are in high demand, and our apprenticeship program provides a direct pathway into a rewarding career without the burden of significant student debt," Fraine said. "I'm excited to build on the program's strong foundation, expand opportunities for students and help meet the workforce needs of our local electrical industry."

The four-year apprenticeship program includes approximately 2,000 hours of paid work experience each year, paired with related classroom instruction. Apprentices typically pay only for textbooks while earning a paycheck throughout their training. Upon completion, graduates advance to journeyman status and are eligible to pursue Florida electrical licensure by passing the state exam. The nationally recognized credential also supports employment opportunities throughout the United States.

Interest in the program continues to grow. Approximately 200 individuals applied this year, with 54 accepted into the current apprenticeship class. The organization is positioning to support two classes each year and is working to hire additional instructors to accommodate increasing demand. Instructors provide both hands-on electrical training and classroom instruction focused on the National Electrical Code.

Classes are held at the Advanced Technology Center, in partnership with Daytona State College as the Local Education Agency. Program leaders are also exploring state, federal and community grant opportunities that could help offset textbook costs for students in the future.

A third-generation graduate of Mainland High School and a University of Central Florida graduate, Fraine has remained active in the Volusia County community through his work with Volusia County Schools and the FUTURES Foundation for Volusia County Schools, where he has served as president, past president and a member of the executive board. He has also championed career and technical education initiatives, including expanding pre-apprenticeship opportunities for local students.
