Metal Band Black Halo Releases Debut Album, Utopia
EntSun News/11084963
Black Halo has released their debut album, Utopia, after 15 years of delays and 7 singer changes. Featured performers include Dirk Verbeuren.
GAITHERSBURG, Md. - EntSun -- Metal band Black Halo has released their debut album Utopia over fifteen years after most of it was recorded. The delay's primary culprit? Singers. Lasting from one to eighteen months, six different men came and went for diverse reasons: creative differences, headed to prison, personal troubles, apathy, financial problems, and being a poor fit. After seven years, and with everything else recorded and even mixed, guitarist Randy Ellefson couldn't take starting the vocals over with another singer yet again.
"I gave up," he says. "I could never use the previous guy's performances because it's a concept album, and a singer change meant a character change that wasn't there. With it being one of my solo albums, there was no one to take over when I burnt out over this."
Six years passed before Ellefson had the heart to try again, with Atlanta's Chase Breedlove (singer #3) returning to get it done a decade later. It still took two years, and mixing had to start from scratch, doubling the album's cost.

Fortunately, the concept album's subject hasn't lost its relevance. The internet continues to offer us help, hope, and shared connectivity – with the growing undertow of misinformation, deep fakes, and bullying. Against this backdrop, the album's main character struggles to cope with the harsh realities of modern life. His disillusionment is reflective of real people, who are increasingly abandoning social media and its shallow connections.
"Except for connecting with fans, I don't use social media anymore myself," says Ellefson, "after one too many unnecessary incidents. Rather than having become dated, the album reflects the reality we live in even more than when I wrote it."
