The award was presented on August 10th during the 90th IFLA World Library and Information Congress (WLIC) in Busan, South Korea. This annual award recognizes newly built libraries that set international benchmarks for accessibility, sustainability, flexibility, and user experience.
Gateway Library is a state-of-the-art facility spanning approximately 28,000 square feet. Its open concept design was inspired by open-air markets around the world. The interior features soaring wood ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows that provide ample natural light, and the use of natural materials that connect the library to its surrounding landscape.
The library was designed by Arizona-based Richrd Kennedy Architects, with Mesa native Kevin Kolden serving as Associate Principal and Designer. Kolden expressed his pride in seeing Gateway Library recognized on an international stage. He also credited the collaboration between their team and the City of Mesa for creating a world-class library that reflects its community and serves its people.
Gateway Library offers a variety of features, including a multipurpose room, THINKspot collaborative makerspace, and dedicated areas for adults, teens, and children. It also boasts a digital art display wall, outdoor reading patio, and plaza for community events.

Located at 5036 S. Eastmark Parkway in southeast Mesa, Gateway Library opened its doors on December 6th, 2025. The funding for this new library came from the 2018 General Obligation Bond approved by Mesa voters and construction sales tax revenues. Willmeng Construction was responsible for building this state-of-the-art facility.
In conclusion, Gateway Library has been recognized as the world's best new public library by IFLA for its exceptional design, innovation, and impact on the community.
