Mesa Public Library Hosts Writer in Residence Office Hours and Workshops

~ Mesa Public Library is offering a unique opportunity for writers to enhance their skills through its Writer in Residence program. From now until July 18, author Oscar Mancinas will be providing one-on-one consultations and workshops for both emerging and experienced writers at the Main Library.
The Writer in Residence program includes various events, such as the Writer in Residence Consultation Hours. These consultations will take place from May through July at the Main Library on 64 E. First St. Writers can book a 30-minute session with Mancinas to receive feedback, guidance, and support on their work. Appointments are required and can be scheduled through the library's event calendar.
In addition to consultations, Mancinas will also be hosting a Blackout/Collage Poetry Workshop on Thursday, May 28 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Main Library. This workshop will explore how existing texts can be transformed into new works of poetry and prose using blackout and collage techniques. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in guided exercises and rethink the words and stories they encounter every day.

On Thursday, June 4 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Mancinas will present "Thoughts & Poems: The Legacy of Ofelia Zepeda and Sun Tracks on Arizona Literature" at the Main Library. This session will delve into the impact of poet, linguist, and editor Ofelia Zepeda and the Sun Tracks Publishing Series on Arizona literature and Indigenous voices. The presentation will conclude with a free-writing exercise focused on collaboration, storytelling, and creative expression.
Oscar Mancinas is a Rarmuri-Chicano poet, scholar, and teacher from Mesa who has published works such as "To Live and Die in El Valle" (2020) - a collection of short stories - and "des__: papeles, palabras, & poems from the desert" (2022) - a collection of poetry.
The Writer in Residence program is made possible by the support of the Arizona State Library, a division of the Secretary of State, with federal funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
