Mesa: Protect Your Pets During Fireworks Displays

EntSun News/11095405
~ As the Fourth of July approaches, many people are looking forward to celebrating with fireworks. However, while these displays may be enjoyable for humans, they can be terrifying for pets. The loud noises, bright lights, and chaotic atmosphere can cause extreme distress for our furry friends.

With the Willmeng Arizona Celebration of Freedom and other Fourth of July fireworks shows happening around the east valley, Mesa Animal Control is reminding pet owners to take precautions to keep their pets safe and calm during the festivities. They have provided a list of tips for pet owners to follow:

Firstly, it is important to make sure that your pets are wearing identification tags or have a microchip with current information. This will help reunite you with your pet if they happen to escape during the celebrations. It is also crucial to ensure that your dog's license is up-to-date.

Secondly, it is advised not to bring your pets along to any outdoor activities where there will be fireworks. The loud noises and bright lights can be overwhelming for them.

To help minimize the impact of fireworks on your pets, it is recommended to keep them inside your home with the television or radio on. This will help cover up some of the noise from outside. Closing the blinds can also help prevent any alarm caused by flashing lights. If your pet is used to being in a crate, it may be beneficial to place them in there during this time.

It is crucial never to leave your pets inside a vehicle during this time. The hot temperatures inside a car can have serious health effects on animals within just a few minutes. Additionally, leaving windows partially open does not provide enough air and also puts your pet at risk of being stolen.

In case your pet does go missing during this time, Maricopa County Animal Care and Control can be contacted at (602) 506-7387 for information on shelter locations and hours. You can also visit maricopa.gov/162/Lost-Found-Pet for more information.

While Arizona allows the legal use of fireworks on private property with the owner's permission from June 24 to July 6, it is essential to remember that not all fireworks are legal. Firecrackers, bottle rockets, and aerials are examples of illegal fireworks. To learn more about the safe and legal use of fireworks, residents can visit mesaaz.gov/fireworks. Any complaints regarding fireworks can be reported to Mesa Police at 480-644-2211 or FIREWORKS@mesaaz.gov.

As we celebrate our nation's independence, let us also remember to keep our furry companions safe and comfortable during this time. By following these tips and being responsible with the use of fireworks, we can ensure a happy and stress-free Fourth of July for both humans and animals alike.
