Mesa Asks You to be Monsoon Ready

~ As the summer season brings monsoon weather to Arizona, residents of Mesa are being reminded to stay prepared for potential storms. With little warning, high winds, heavy rain, and other dangerous conditions can arise within minutes, making it crucial for individuals to have an emergency plan in place.

In light of Monsoon Awareness Week in Arizona, the Mesa Emergency Management Director, Robert Campa, is urging residents to take necessary precautions and have a disaster kit stocked with essential items such as water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, medications, and first aid supplies. It is also important for pet owners to prepare emergency supplies for their furry companions.

To stay informed about potential storms and emergencies throughout the monsoon season, residents are encouraged to monitor weather forecasts and sign up for emergency alerts. According to Campa, "Monsoon storms can develop quickly and bring dangerous conditions with little warning, so taking time now to prepare can make a big difference."

The elderly and homebound individuals are among the most vulnerable during monsoon weather. To help these individuals in their community, Mesa residents are encouraged to check on their older or homebound neighbors before, during and after a storm. This includes ensuring they have sandbags available for potential flooding and a backup source of power for medical equipment or refrigerated prescriptions.

For those in need of sandbags in preparation for potential flooding, the City of Mesa has designated locations where residents can pick up sandbags and empty bags (shovels must be brought by individuals). These locations include Fire Station 202 on S. Stapley Drive, Fire Station 208 on E. McKellips Road, Fire Station 209 on E. Southern Ave., and Fire Station 212 on E. Ellsworth Road.

Additionally, the Mesa Transportation Department has pre-filled sandbags available at their West Mesa Service Center on E. 6th St. and East Mesa Service Center on E. Decatur St. for residents to pick up.
