Men's Health Network Congratulates UK on Launch of England's 1st-Ever Men's Health Strategy

EntSun News/11077720
Groundbreaking national plan marks a historic milestone for men and boys in England.

WASHINGTON - EntSun -- Men's Health Network (MHN) applauds the Government of the United Kingdom on the release of England's first-ever Men's Health Strategy. The plan aims to improve the health of men and boys by addressing longstanding physical and mental health disparities.

Released on International Men's Day, the strategy focuses on higher suicide rates, preventable chronic disease, untreated mental health conditions, and the stigma that prevents many men from seeking help. It also expands community programs, workplace health efforts, and access to services.

Key commitments include:
  • £3.6 million for suicide prevention projects
  • Partnership with the Premier League's Together Against Suicide initiative
  • Improved prostate cancer care, including future home PSA testing
  • £3 million in community-based men's health programs
  • New training for healthcare professionals
  • Workplace pilots in male-dominated industries
  • Investments addressing cardiovascular disease, lung conditions, addiction, and other major causes of early death
MHN President Ronald Henry Commends the UK's Leadership
Ronald Henry, President of Men's Health Network and a member of the Governing Board of Global Action on Men's Health, praised the UK decision and said, "The UK joins the growing number of nations with an explicit Men's Health Strategy in recognition of the problems faced by men in accessing and utilizing the healthcare system."

Mr. Henry continued, "There is a growing realization that the Lifespan Gender Gap is not immutable or inexorable. It rises and falls both with medical advances and with public health policy decisions. We are gratified to see the UK government's commitment."

"We urge the US and each individual state to follow the example of the UK and the other nations that have chosen to explicitly acknowledge the healthcare needs of men and boys," said Mr. Henry.

A Global Step Forward
Men in England continue to experience higher early mortality, lower preventive care use, substance-related harms, and suicide rates that account for most suicides. The strategy addresses these challenges through evidence-based and coordinated action.

Key elements include:
  • Increased suicide prevention funding
  • Expanded NHS and Premier League collaboration
  • Home PSA testing pathways beginning in 2027
  • Workplace health pilots
  • Support for former mining communities
  • Research funding focused on major male health burdens
A Call for Leadership
England now joins a growing list of nations with a national men's health strategy, an approach MHN has long supported. MHN encourages other governments, including the United States, to adopt similar efforts to address preventable male health disparities.
