Mayor Wu, Boston Emergency Medical Services Celebrate New EMTs and Recent Promotions

~ In a ceremony held at Boston's historic Faneuil Hall, Mayor Michelle Wu, along with representatives from Boston Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC), celebrated the graduation of 26 new EMTs and the recent promotion of eight EMS members. The event marked an important milestone for the city's emergency response services as they continue to strengthen their 9-1-1 ambulance and dispatch services in response to growing demand.

The graduates, all state-certified EMTs, successfully completed the rigorous Boston EMS Recruit Academy. This intensive training program prepares recruits to deliver high-quality emergency care across the city. With this new class joining their ranks, Boston EMS is better equipped to handle a wide range of life-threatening situations.

During the ceremony, Mayor Wu congratulated the newest class of EMT graduates and commended them for their commitment to a profession rooted in service, compassion, and skill. She emphasized the critical role that EMS plays in delivering care across the city and expressed her gratitude for their dedication to keeping every neighborhood in Boston safe and healthy.

Boston EMS Chief James Hooley also welcomed the new class of EMTs, acknowledging their impressive dedication and heart. He highlighted how their training has prepared them for real emergencies, fast-changing situations, and the responsibility of caring for people when they need it most. Chief Hooley also emphasized that with major events such as FIFA World Cup events, Sail Boston, the Marathon, and 250th commemorations coming up this spring and summer, these new EMTs are joining at an extraordinary moment when their skills will be put to test.

The Boston EMS Recruit Academy is a full-time paid program that combines classroom instruction with field training to prepare EMTs for various life-threatening emergencies. Throughout their training, these graduates collectively responded to over 3,000 9-1-1 calls where they treated patients experiencing everything from cardiac arrest and childbirth to serious trauma and behavioral health crises.

Dr. Bisola Ojikutu, Commissioner of Public Health for the City of Boston, also congratulated the graduates and recognized their decision to serve as critical to the health and wellness of the city. She emphasized that as first responders, they play a crucial role in delivering skilled care at the moments when people need it most. Dr. Ojikutu expressed her gratitude for their service and highlighted how their work is essential in building a healthier and more equitable Boston.

In addition to celebrating the new EMT graduates, the department also honored six Emergency Medical Technicians who were recently promoted to the rank of Paramedic. These individuals successfully completed an intensive paramedic program, departmental promotional exams, and a demanding three-month field internship. The department also recognized two members who were promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, bringing nearly 25 years of combined experience to the supervisory ranks.

Chief Hooley congratulated these individuals on their promotions, stating that they have demonstrated exceptional skill, dedication, and readiness to lead. He emphasized that their impact will be felt far beyond the walls of EMS throughout every neighborhood they serve.

Boston EMS is one of the busiest municipal EMS providers in New England, responding to over 141,000 emergency medical incidents per year. With this new class of EMTs joining their ranks and recent promotions within the department, Boston EMS is well-equipped to continue providing high-quality emergency care to residents and visitors in every neighborhood of Boston.
