Madison Public Market Achieves LEED Gold Certification
EntSun News/11083781
~ The City of Madison Engineering Division has announced that the highly anticipated Madison Public Market Facility has achieved LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. This achievement is a testament to the city's commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
Located at 202 N. First Street in Madison, Wisconsin, the Madison Public Market will serve as a community gathering space and home to a diverse array of merchants and vendors. It will be a year-round destination for fostering community connections and supporting the growth of both new and established businesses. The addition of the Madison Public Market further solidifies the city's efforts to achieve LEED certification for all its buildings.
Keisha Harrison, CEO of the Madison Public Market Foundation, expressed her excitement about achieving LEED Gold certification, stating that it reflects the values of their community and sets the stage for a market that will serve generations to come. She also emphasized that visitors can expect not only a vibrant gathering space with local food and artisans but also a building that exemplifies their dedication to a healthier and more sustainable future.
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is an internationally recognized green building certification system that evaluates buildings based on their environmental performance. LEED-certified buildings aim to use less energy and water, reduce waste, and provide better spaces for occupants. Achieving LEED Gold certification means meeting specific standards for sustainability, including energy efficiency, renewable energy use, and indoor air quality. These buildings are not only cost-effective but also provide healthier work environments.

The Madison Public Market is now the fifteenth LEED certified project in the city and its tenth project to achieve LEED Gold status. This accomplishment surpasses the recent Common Council resolution requiring all renovations of City facilities on City-owned land to meet at least LEED Silver standards.
Some highlights of achieving LEED Gold certification for the Madison Public Market include new energy-efficient windows and doors that provide natural light and views, reduced air infiltration, high-performance LED lighting, and an energy-efficient HVAC system. The building also features low VOC materials and products, low-flow plumbing fixtures to reduce water consumption, and a stormwater management system. Additionally, the market has direct access to the city bus system and ample parking for bikes. Solar PV panels supplement electrical energy use, and a rainwater cistern system is in place for restroom toilet fixtures.
The City of Madison Engineering Division's Facilities staff worked with MSR Design for the project's design and Daniels Construction for its construction.
The Madison Public Market is the culmination of decades of research, planning, and community engagement. With a total cost of approximately $23.6 million for planning, design, and construction, the project is on track to be completed under budget.
