Long Beach: Meredith Reynolds Appointed as Acting Director of Technology and Innovation Department

Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - In a recent announcement, City Manager Tom Modica has appointed Deputy City Manager Meredith Reynolds as the Acting Director of the Technology and Innovation Department (TID), effective April 4, 2026. Ms. Reynolds will continue to serve as Deputy City Manager while also taking on this new role until a permanent director is selected through a national recruitment process in the fall of 2026.

According to Modica, Ms. Reynolds brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the position. "Meredith has a strong track record of leadership, innovation, and cross-departmental collaboration that will continue to advance Long Beach's work in delivering modern, efficient, and accessible services to our communities," he stated. "Her experience in leading complex initiatives and utilizing technology to promote equity and transparency make her exceptionally well-suited for this role."

Ms. Reynolds has been with the City for 17 years and has played a crucial role in various initiatives focused on equity, community engagement, and technological innovation. She has been instrumental in driving citywide technology efforts such as modernizing permitting and land management systems, improving the City's website and digital services, and expanding data-driven tools to enhance service delivery, inclusion, and transparency for the community.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Ms. Reynolds was responsible for setting up the City's COVID-19 testing program which secured $27 million in funding to support an average of 4,000 tests per day. She has also worked towards streamlining workflows across different departments within the City, improving public access to services, and strengthening the City's ability to measure and communicate its impact on the community.

In her current role as Deputy City Manager since 2021, Ms. Reynolds oversees programs focused on growth and resilience that support initiatives promoting long-term sustainability, capacity building, and modernization within the City. She has been involved in developing innovative programs through Long Beach's Smart City initiative, including Long Beach Co-Lab and Pitch Long Beach. Ms. Reynolds has also led the development of the Long Beach Recovery Act Data Dashboard and the Climate Data Portal, as well as advancing the City's use of emerging technologies such as automation and artificial intelligence.

Prior to her appointment as Deputy City Manager, Ms. Reynolds held several other leadership positions within the City, including Special Deputy City Manager for Recovery where she oversaw the equitable design and implementation of 85 health and economic recovery programs totaling nearly $300 million. She has also served as Long Beach Planning and Partnerships Manager and Park Development Officer. Ms. Reynolds began her career in local government through the City's Management Assistant Program in 2005.

Ms. Reynolds holds a master's degree in Public Policy and Management from Carnegie Mellon University and a bachelor's degree in Public Administration with a minor in Organizational Communication from California State University, Chico.
