Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach Launches New Program to Prepare Residents for Careers in Entertainment Industry

The City of Long Beach is taking steps to ensure that its residents are well-equipped for the growing entertainment industry in the area. The Department of Economic Development & Opportunity (EDO) has announced the launch of the Long Beach Creative Corps Entertainment Production Assistant Program, a workforce development initiative aimed at preparing local residents for careers in film, television, live events, broadcast production, digital media and other areas within the entertainment industry.

According to Mayor Rex Richardson, Long Beach is quickly becoming a top destination for world-class entertainment. The Creative Corps Program will not only connect residents with emerging opportunities in this industry but also ensure that the city's growth benefits its people.

The no-cost pilot program will be administered by the Department's Long Beach Workforce Innovation Network (LBWIN) Youth Career Services Center in partnership with Codega Media. It will train a cohort of 10 young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 through industry-led production assistant training, career coaching, and paid work-based learning opportunities. These opportunities will connect participants directly to employers throughout Southern California's growing entertainment ecosystem.

The training is set to take place on September 23rd and 24th at the LBWIN Youth Career Services Center located at 508 W. Willow St. The program director Bo Martinez believes that by combining industry-recognized training with real-world experience and comprehensive support services, they are preparing the next generation of talent for successful careers in the entertainment industry. He also stated that this initiative is about creating opportunities, strengthening the workforce, and building professional networks and career pathways that will contribute to Long Beach's creative economy for years to come.

To provide more information about the program, a virtual information session will be held on August 26th from 4-5 p.m. Interested individuals can learn more about essential production assistant training and various career paths such as stagehand, live event production technician, broadcast production assistant, camera production assistant, audio and lighting assistant, event operations support, digital media production assistant, production office assistant, streaming and live broadcast support.

The program also aims to introduce cohort members to entry-level positions with production companies, event operators, convention facilities, and entertainment venues. After completing the classroom instruction, participants will have the opportunity to connect with paid work experience and employment opportunities within the entertainment industry.

Funded by the federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Adult and Youth programs, the Program prioritizes applicants who face barriers to education or employment. This includes individuals who have experienced housing instability, foster care, justice involvement, disabilities, low-income circumstances or other related challenges.

The Creative Corps Production Assistant Program aligns with Long Beach's investment in the creative economy and Mayor Rex Richardson's vision to make it a premier destination for arts, entertainment, tourism and innovation. With the city's expansion of its entertainment infrastructure including the new F&M Bank Amphitheater of Long Beach and ongoing investment in the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center, there is a growing demand for a skilled local workforce to support major productions such as concerts, festivals, television and film productions.

Melanie Mack, President of Codega Media Inc., expressed her excitement about this partnership with the City. She believes that there is no shortage of talent in Long Beach; there is just a lack of access. The Creative Corps Production Assistant Program aims to open doors for residents by providing them with training for real careers in film and television.
