Local Teacher Bans RetroSlang Clothing, Says It Makes Students "Too Butter"
EntSun News/11072414
Educator cites new clothing and new DJ Retro plush release as cause for concern.
SAN FRANCISCO - EntSun -- A middle school teacher in San Francisco's Mission District is trying to ban RetroSlang apparel from her classroom after claiming the brand's designs and lingo were making students "too butter" to focus on their studies.
Ms. Karen Tillman, an eighth-grade English teacher at Roosevelt Middle School, told reporters she first noticed the disruption when students began showing up in matching RetroSlang hoodies and stickers, using phrases borrowed from the brand's digital universe instead of turning in their essays.
"One kid turned in a paper that just said 'That's butter.' Another wrote, 'Retro said I don't need to rhyme if I'm vibin.' That's when I knew this wasn't just fashion—it was a contagion," Tillman said.
What "Butter" Means in RetroSlang

In the RetroSlang lexicon, "butter" is shorthand for too smooth, too fly, too stylish to be denied. Originally part of the clothing label's throwback '90s aesthetic, the term has taken on a life of its own in classrooms across the Bay Area. Students have reportedly been using "butter" as a replacement for almost every adjective—describing homework, cafeteria food, even math tests.
RetroSlang's Wider Reach
RetroSlang is more than just a clothing line—it's tied to a virtual world experience currently in development. Guided by DJ Retro, a boombox-headed character, players can explore a music-driven digital space inspired by '90s mixtapes and slang culture. The brand has gained traction with Gen Alpha and Gen Z, who proudly sport both digital skins and physical merch as part of their identity.
While educators like Tillman see it as a distraction, others argue it's an innovative bridge between culture, fashion, and technology.

"Kids are connecting with each other, learning digital literacy, and celebrating creativity," said Dr. James Li, a youth culture analyst at SF State. "Sure, it's disruptive in class—but so was hip-hop once upon a time."
The Potential Ban and Its Impact
The ban, which prohibits RetroSlang hoodies, tees, and stickers inside Tillman's classroom, has only amplified the brand's status among students. Some parents report their children are even more determined to collect RetroSlang merch, seeing the ban as a "badge of honor."
In response, RetroSlang representatives issued a tongue-in-cheek statement:
"We respect the academic hustle, but if being 'too butter' is a crime, then every kid deserves detention. Stay Retro."
Where To See What The Fuss Is About
Despite the ban, RetroSlang continues to grow. Fans can view the latest drops and virtual world teasers at https://RetroSlang.us
As of press time, students in Tillman's classroom had reportedly started calling detention "Butter Time," further complicating her attempts to regain control.
