Local Cancer Survivor Advocate Declared March As Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month In New Hampshire

EntSun News/11016388
WAKEFIELD, N.H. - EntSun -- February 21, 2024 -- Wakefield resident Sheridan B Folger, (a colorectal cancer survivor, and advocate) is a champion for colorectal cancer! He recently secured a state proclamation from Governor Chris Sununu to raise awareness for colon and rectal cancers during March, Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. He also has arranged for several landmarks to turn BLUE for the national awareness month (throughout March).

Sheridan is one of the thousands of advocates from across the United States who are engaging policymakers about the importance of colorectal cancer, the second-leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. among men and women combined. In 2023, 43 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico all recognized March as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Advocates from all 50 states are engaging elected officials with this request for 2024. By securing GOVERNOR Chris Sununu's support through a proclamation, the cause is elevated all across New Hampshire and the message about getting screened for a preventable disease goes further.

In addition to working to raise awareness through elected officials, Sheridan worked with local leaders to get landmarks lit up blue, the color of colorectal cancer awareness. The landmark project is a collaboration between Fight CRC and the Colon Cancer Coalition. Check out all of the landmarks that are going blue in March on social media at the hashtag: #BlueforCRC.

PERSONAL QUOTE "Awareness is prevention. This disease is now growing in our world, and it is targeting our young. Together, by encouraging simple awareness we can hit our goal of achieving screening rates of 80% in all our communities, which will have a wildly significant impact on mortality rates."

By 2030, the incidence of early-age onset CRC is predicted to increase by more than 140%, meaning more than 27,000 people under age 50 will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer making it the leading cause of cancer-related deaths for that age group. March 10-12, 2024, advocates from across the country are gathering in Washington D.C. to raise awareness for this statistic at Fight CRC's annual Call-on Congress event. Advocates will meet with their members of Congress to share their stories and push for more research dollars. Fight CRC will also be planting 27,400 flags on the National Mall to represent the number of patients under age 50 expected to be diagnosed with CRC in 2030.
