Listening to Your Heart: Why Heart Health Awareness Matters—Especially in February

EntSun News/11084147
WACO, Texas - EntSun -- February is American Heart Month, a time to raise awareness about heart health and encourage people to listen closely to their bodies. For me, heart health is deeply personal.

At 18 years old, shortly after getting my own medical insurance, I began noticing unusual sensations in my chest after exercising. I decided to see a doctor, which led to a referral to a cardiologist and several tests. I was diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse, a condition in which the mitral valve does not close properly. I also have mitral regurgitation, meaning the valve allows some blood to leak backward instead of flowing efficiently through the heart. While these conditions are fairly common and manageable, they require ongoing care and attention.

Instead of responding with fear, I chose to be proactive. I partnered with my physician, made lifestyle changes early, and committed to staying informed about my health. Today, as a speaker, educator, entrepreneur, and community outreach liaison for Southern Career Institute, maintaining my heart health is essential to sustaining a busy and fulfilling life.

When I think about heart health, I focus on four key areas: physical activity, nutrition, rest, and stress management. I stay active through exercise and movement I enjoy, pay attention to what I eat, prioritize rest and self-care, and intentionally manage stress. One cardiologist once reminded me that learning how to decompress and make time for joy is just as important as exercise and diet.

Most importantly, I remain under medical care and encourage others to do the same. Asking questions, reporting symptoms, and listening to your body can make a life-changing difference. Heart health is not something we manage alone—together, we can encourage healthier choices and create a culture of awareness, care, and prevention.

Heart health is about awareness, action, and community. When we listen to our bodies, seek care sooner rather than later, and encourage one another to make healthier choices, we all benefit. This February—and every month—I hope my story serves as a reminder that your heart is worth protecting, prioritizing, and listening to.
