Kerry Jordan Named Executive Director of City of Boston Election Department
EntSun News/11100257
~ Boston, MA - Mayor Michelle Wu has announced the appointment of Kerry Jordan as the new Executive Director of the City of Boston Election Department. The announcement was made during a press conference where Mayor Wu also provided an update on the department's ongoing operational and modernization efforts ahead of the September 1 State Primary.
Jordan, who currently serves as Chief of Staff for the Department of Innovation and Technology (DoIT), will assume his new role on September 8, 2026. Until then, Commissioner of City Records Paul Chong will continue to serve as Acting Head of the Elections Department and oversee day-to-day operations.
In her statement, Mayor Wu expressed confidence in Jordan's abilities to lead the department and continue its efforts to improve operations, processes, and technology. She highlighted his expertise in technology and experience in building secure and efficient systems, as well as his long-standing leadership in public service.
Under Mayor Wu's leadership, the City of Boston Election Department has made significant progress in modernizing the election process with a focus on speed, accuracy, and constituent services. One notable improvement is the expanded use of electronic poll books which have reduced check-in times from 3-5 minutes to just 15-30 seconds for most voters. This system also allows for real-time ballot tracking and quickly directs voters to their correct polling location if they arrive at the wrong one.

Commissioner Chong praised these operational changes that have improved communication with poll workers and provided live data about turnout and inventory. He emphasized that their focus is on continuous improvement to ensure all Boston voters have access to free and fair elections.
In addition to these improvements, last year saw the launch of a high-performing Election Day call center which was supported by mobilizing the 311 team to handle election-related calls. This helped provide updated information to poll workers and voters alike. The Emergency Operations Center also played a crucial role in modernizing rapid resource mobilization and real-time troubleshooting at the polls. These successes will be built upon in 2026 with enhanced poll worker training and staffing models to support residents as they head to the ballot box.
The City of Boston Election Department is responsible for administering all municipal, state, and federal elections held in Boston. They also handle voter registration, conduct the City's annual census, and provide residents with information and resources about voting and elections.
As the new Executive Director, Kerry Jordan will lead this critical department and continue efforts to strengthen constituent services, modernize operations, and ensure Boston voters have reliable access to fair and secure elections. In his statement, Jordan expressed his excitement to join a team that is diligent, dedicated, and hardworking in their mission to ensure every vote counts.
