ICYMI: Boston Globe Op-Ed from Mayor Michelle Wu: New White Stadium Combines History, Sports, and Community
EntSun News/11086286
~ Boston, MA - In an op-ed published in the Boston Globe, Mayor Michelle Wu has announced the exciting news of the newly renovated White Stadium. The mayor outlines how this project will not only benefit the community but also create a world-class home for Boston Public Schools (BPS) athletics.
As a mother and mayor, Wu understands the transformative power of youth sports. She believes that in order to make Boston the best city for families, it is crucial to provide opportunities for student athletics in addition to creating housing, jobs, and excellent schools.
White Stadium holds a special place in the hearts of Bostonians as it was once a treasured gathering place for all. However, after being damaged by a fire and facing years of disinvestment and delays, it has lost its former glory. But that is all about to change.
Next summer, after 40 years of waiting, White Stadium will once again be the best public school sports facility in the country. The new hub for BPS athletics will feature a professional-grade grass field and eight-lane track, student strength and conditioning facilities, after-school study spaces, and a community room for team banquets and neighborhood events.

This transformation is made possible through a unique partnership with Boston's newest professional sports franchise - Boston Legacy FC. This National Women's Soccer League team will not only help rebuild and maintain the facility but also invest in community benefits directed towards restoring Franklin Park and supporting organizations in the surrounding neighborhood.
What sets this deal apart from others is that it does not involve transferring public land or dollars to a for-profit sports entity. Instead, this publicly owned student athletics facility will be leased by Boston Legacy FC for up to 20 games per year. This means that students and community members will have access to the facilities every day - even on game days.
The deal with Boston Legacy totals $252 million in community benefits over 15 years - making it the largest such deal in the city's history. This includes 60% of the construction costs, which have been capped by a Guaranteed Maximum Price contract.

While some may argue that the cost is too high, Mayor Wu believes that the long-term benefits for students, communities, and future generations far outweigh the initial upfront cost. She refuses to settle for anything less than a world-class athletic complex surrounded by a historic public park.
The mayor also addresses those who suggest scaling back the project or letting the site sit in ruin. She firmly states that after decades of broken promises to students and park lovers, it is time to deliver on their vision and provide a home field that proves Boston truly is the city of champions.
In conclusion, Mayor Wu's op-ed highlights how the newly renovated White Stadium will not only benefit local businesses and surrounding communities but also invest in our students' future. With this project, Boston is once again making history by investing in the public good.
