Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful Puts a Fresh Spin on Great American Cleanup 2019

Georgia-based, Eco-Focused Nonprofit Unveils Year-Round Version of the Nation's Largest Community Improvement Program
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - March 7, 2019 - EntSun -- On the heels of the 20th Anniversary of Great American Cleanup last year, local Keep America Beautiful affiliate – Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful (GCB) – began to explore ways to spread that same spirit of community involvement throughout the year. Launched by Keep America Beautiful in 1999 and marking the nation's largest community improvement program, Great American Cleanup is typically observed from March through May each year. However, this year, GCB will begin promoting Great American Cleanup year-round – with a number of project-focused themes to target specific areas of need within the county.
The way that Great American Cleanup 2.0 will work is through submissions of possible projects by Gwinnett County residents. Each month, Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful will pick at least one submitted project to fund. Project themes are as follows:
Dial-a-Dumpster: This could be Gwinnett's new go-to community cleanup solution! If local residents/business owners want to clean up illegal dumping or plan an invasive plant removal near their neighborhood or business, they can create a group project knowing that the safe disposal of these materials could be provided for in the event that their project is selected for funding.

Litter League: There's nothing quite like an afternoon well-spent! Neighbors who notice a road, stream, lake or pond nearby that has become an eyesore due to litter can take initiative by proposing a cleanup event. Whether they need volunteers or have some ready to get to work, if their project is chosen – GCB will help them organize the event and provide the materials needed to restore that eyesore to its original beauty.
Groom & Bloom: Spring and Fall are two of the best times of year to plant in the Deep South! For those neighbors who want to plant a school/community garden or simply add some flowers to the front of their neighborhood or business, if selected – GCB can help by providing the tools and materials. When submitting their project application, participants are asked to include an estimated number and types of plants requested, as well as any tools needed.
Students Serving Seniors: For residents who are past their prime gardening years and find it difficult to maintain their yard, they can request the help of one of GCB's excellent student volunteers to pull weeds, rake leaves, weatherproof outdoor faucets, remove dead branches and more! When submitting their project application, participants are asked to include in the notes how many hours of work they estimate for one to three volunteers and what type of work is needed.
"In addition to our mission of connecting people and resources for a sustainable Gwinnett, our organization is dedicated to motivating our neighbors to take action on behalf of their community," said Schelly Marlatt, Executive Director of Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful. "With Great American Cleanup 2.0, we're putting a fresh spin on an old but GREAT idea. Based on the calls and emails we receive regularly, it's clear that everyone sees a need for something like this. Now we can provide the funding needed to complete the cleanup, beautification, recycling, and other projects our neighbors have been itching to do!"
