Governor Polis Visits Southeast Colorado
EntSun News/11089170
SOUTHEASTERN COLORADO ~ Governor Polis spent the day in Southeastern Colorado, visiting the towns of Lamar, Kit Carson, and Arriba. His itinerary included observing the Lesser Prairie Chickens in their natural habitat, meeting with students and staff at Lamar Community College and Kit Carson P-12, and touring the headquarters of BHV Adventures, an innovative tiny homes manufacturer.
The Lesser Prairie Chickens are a native species to the sand sage and mid-grass habitats of Southeast Colorado. However, recent surveys have shown a decline in their population, with only an estimated 30,000 remaining across their range. In response to this concerning trend, Governor Polis and Colorado Parks and Wildlife have designated a Sand Sage Generational Grasslands stronghold priority area in Prowers and Kiowa Counties. This strategy aims to support responsible stewardship of private lands and implement management practices that benefit the LPC population. The ultimate goal is to conserve over 50,000 acres of land in Colorado for these birds.

Governor Polis praised the college's efforts in preparing students for success in the workforce. He also expressed his interest in learning more about how they can better support learners.
In Kit Carson P-12 School, Governor Polis had a chance to interact with elementary students while learning about their excellent FFA (Future Farmers of America) and music programs. The school has a proud history, having won a National Blue Ribbon School Award in 2004.
