Governor Polis Celebrates Colorado International Friendship Day: Highlights Colorado's Strong International Partnerships

DENVER ~ Denver, CO - On this day, Governor Jared Polis, along with the Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT) and members of the Colorado State Legislature, gathered to commemorate the first-ever Colorado International Friendship Day. This special occasion was dedicated to recognizing the vital international relationships that contribute to the growth and prosperity of Colorado's economy, workforce, and culture.

During the celebration, Governor Polis expressed his pride in Colorado's strong global partnerships and proclaimed this day as a tribute to those connections. He emphasized how these collaborations drive innovation, attract businesses, create jobs, and align with their vision of a thriving Colorado for all.

Lt. Governor Dianne Primavera also spoke at the event, highlighting their commitment to building upon these international relationships. She shared her personal experience of engaging with colleagues from around the world and expressed her pride in the partnerships they have built. She believes that by working beyond state borders, they can expand opportunities and advance their vision of a Colorado for all.

Michelle Hadwiger, Director of Global Business Development at OEDIT, also addressed the importance of global collaboration in today's world. She stated that subnational dialogue and partnership are crucial elements of economic and diplomatic engagement. So far this year, her team has welcomed over 60 delegations from various countries. Additionally, there are currently nine Consulates General and Foreign Missions as well as 35 Honorary Consulates located in Colorado.

The event brought together delegates from Armenia, El Salvador, Estonia, France, Denmark, Honduras, Japan, Norway Peru Poland Sweden as well as representatives from Chambers of Commerce including those from Africa and India. These international trade relations play a significant role in Colorado's economy by contributing to over 820,000 jobs - making up 20% of its workforce.

In addition to trade relations, tourism is another essential aspect that contributes significantly to Colorado's economy. In 2024 alone it generated $28.5 billion and generated $1.9 billion in local and state revenues. This industry also created 188,210 jobs in the state. The strong international relationships and investments into tourism create more opportunities for travelers from around the world to experience all that Colorado has to offer.

In conclusion, the inaugural Colorado International Friendship Day was a celebration of the state's global partnerships and their contributions to its economy, workforce, and culture.
