Governor Polis and CDOT Director Lew Applaud Collaboration to Pull Initiative 175 From the Ballot, Build on Historic Investments in Colorado's Roads

DENVER ~ In a joint effort to find sustainable solutions for funding Colorado's roads and transportation system, Governor Jared Polis and Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) Director Shoshana Lew have announced that Initiative 175, proposed by the group Restore our Roads, will be withdrawn from the ballot.

Governor Polis expressed his satisfaction with the collaboration between state leaders and Restore our Roads, stating that the removal of Initiative 175 from the ballot will build upon the administration's previous investments in roads, highways, bridges, and tunnels. He also emphasized that the initiative would have had a detrimental impact on Colorado's budget and diverted crucial funding from other important priorities such as education and healthcare.

The Governor extended his gratitude to Attorney General Phil Weiser, Senator Judy Amabile, Speaker Pro Tempore Andy Bosenecker, campaign proponents, and all those involved in the effort for coming together in good faith to focus on alternative ideas that will improve the state's transportation system without compromising other essential priorities. He also highlighted the success of legislation signed under his leadership that has provided over $600 million in funding for transportation in Fiscal Year 2027 alone.

CDOT Executive Director Shoshana Lew echoed Governor Polis' sentiments and thanked Representative Boesenecker, Senator Amabile, and Attorney General Weiser for bringing this critical conversation together. She commended their efforts to build upon past legislative funding accomplishments over the past eight years which have resulted in significant progress for rural road projects across the state, major transit improvements like mobility hubs on I-25, and capacity enhancements such as Floyd Hill on I-70.

Under Governor Polis' leadership, major legislation has been passed by the General Assembly to provide ongoing funding for transportation. The laws signed by Governor Polis are expected to generate $5 billion over a decade with nearly 75% of that funding dedicated to roads, bridges, and tunnels. This has already led to significant improvements such as the completion of Floyd Hill and the paving of over 2,500 miles of rural roads.

According to CDOT data, there has been a notable improvement in the condition of Colorado's interstate pavement, with 50.6% in good condition in 2025 compared to 42.8% three years ago. Similarly, major roads on the National Highway System have also shown progress, with pavement in good condition at its highest level since 2018 and poor condition at its lowest level since 2018.

The withdrawal of Initiative 175 marks a significant step towards finding sustainable solutions for funding Colorado's roads and transportation system. The collaboration between state leaders and Restore our Roads sets a positive precedent for future efforts to improve the state's infrastructure.
