Governor Abbott Mobilizes State Emergency Response Resources Ahead Of Texas Severe Storm Threat

~ As severe thunderstorms are forecasted to hit vast portions of Texas, Governor Greg Abbott has taken action to ensure the safety of those potentially affected. In a statement released today, the governor directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to activate state emergency response resources.

"Texas is prepared to assist those impacted by forecasted storm activity across the state," said Governor Abbott. "I directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management to activate and mobilize state emergency resources to potentially affected communities. I urge Texans to heed the guidance of state and local officials to keep themselves and their loved ones safe."

According to the National Weather Service, a cold front moving through the state later today is expected to create hazardous conditions across large areas of North, Central, West, Northwest, Northeast, and South-Central Texas as it shifts. The potential threats include large hail over 2 inches in diameter, damaging wind gusts above 75 miles per hour, possible tornadoes, heavy rainfall ranging from 1-3+ inches with isolated areas receiving up to 4-7+ inches, and flash flooding throughout the middle of this week.

In addition to these severe weather conditions, extremely critical fire weather conditions are also persisting in the Panhandle and South Plains regions. TDEM and other agencies on the Texas Emergency Management Council are closely monitoring increased wildfire danger in West and Northwest Texas. State response personnel are actively engaged in supporting local officials amid ongoing wildfire activity.

At Governor Abbott's direction, various state emergency response resources remain available for support during severe weather operations and ongoing wildfire response efforts. These include swiftwater rescue boat squads and urban search and rescue teams from Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (Texas A&M Task Force 1 and Texas Task Force 2), as well as personnel from TDEM's State Incident Management Team, All Hazards Group responders, Incident Support Task Force, Disaster Recovery Task Force, and regional personnel.

The Texas Department of Transportation is also monitoring road conditions, while the Texas A&M Forest Service has deployed over 350 state, local, and out-of-state firefighters and support personnel, along with heavy equipment and federally contracted firefighting aircraft. The Texas National Guard has also made Blackhawk and Chinook helicopters with firefighting capabilities available.

Other agencies such as the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Department of State Health Services (Texas Emergency Medical Task Force), Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Public Utility Commission of Texas, Railroad Commission of Texas, and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality are all actively involved in monitoring and responding to potential emergencies.

Governor Abbott urges Texans to proactively prepare for these severe weather conditions by reviewing family communication plans, assembling emergency supply kits, and following guidance from local officials. He also reminds citizens to never walk or drive through flooded roadways during storms and to avoid activities that could cause sparks in areas experiencing increased fire danger.
