Governor Abbott Appoints Five To Rehabilitation Council Of Texas

~ Governor Greg Abbott has recently announced the appointment of five individuals to the Rehabilitation Council of Texas, a council that works closely with the Texas Workforce Commission to advocate for people with disabilities in the vocational rehabilitation process. The appointments include Leslie Cantu, Marla Williams, Elizabeth "Elle" Holtzman, Jeanie Beaman, and Peggy Schmidt.

Leslie Cantu, a resident of Poteet, has been appointed as the vice president of Toyotetsu Texas, Inc. (TTTX). She brings a wealth of experience to the council as she currently serves as the board chair of Workforce Solutions Alamo and is also the president of the Texas Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education – Alamo Chapter. In addition, Cantu is a member of various advisory boards including the Texas Workforce Commission Adult Education and Literacy Advisory Committee and several high school PTech advisory boards. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Texas A&M University.

Marla Williams from Fort Worth has also been appointed to the council. Williams is the founder and director of Strategic Employment Solutions, LLC and has extensive experience as an employment specialist. She previously worked for Eagle Mountain–Saginaw independent school district where she served as a special education classroom teacher for four years before becoming a Transition Specialist for 10 years. Williams holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from The University of Texas at Arlington.

Elizabeth "Elle" Holtzman hails from Beaumont and currently works as an ice slinger at Stormie's SnoCones and T-Shirts. She is also actively involved in advocating for people with disabilities through her role on the leadership team for Southeast Texas Self-Advocates, which is part of The Arc of Greater Beaumont. Holtzman received an associate degree in general studies from Lamar Institute of Technology.

Jeanie Beaman, a resident of Comfort, brings over 32 years of experience as a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor to the council. She currently serves as a senior staff advocate for Disability Rights Texas and is also a board member of the National Rehabilitation Association and a member of the Texas Rehabilitation Association. Beaman holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from St. Catherine University, a Master of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling from St. Cloud State University, and a certificate in Forensic Rehabilitation Counseling from The George Washington University.

Lastly, Peggy Schmidt from Lucas has been reappointed to the council. Schmidt is the Associate Director of the Community Rehabilitation Provider at the University of North Texas' Workplace Inclusion and Sustainable Employment. She is also an active member of the Association of People Supporting Employment First and volunteers for Christ the Servant Lutheran Church as a youth and family volunteer. Schmidt holds a Bachelor of Science in Sociology and Criminal Justice from South Dakota State University.

All five individuals have been appointed for terms set to expire on October 29, 2028, and will play an important role in advocating for people with disabilities in the vocational rehabilitation process. Their diverse backgrounds and experiences will bring valuable insights to the council's work with the Texas Workforce Commission.
